I am a legal permanent resident, is it true that I can be deported if I commit a crime?
Being a permanent legal resident does not mean that you cannot be deported from the country. I have always disliked the use of the word “permanent” to describe legal residence in this country, because in reality it is not permanent, since a legal resident can face a deportation hearing as a result of having committed a crime.
There are many crimes that can result in being referred to a hearing to defend a deportation before an immigration judge. It is for this reason that if you are arrested for a crime, it is very important that you obtain legal representation to defend your rights, your criminal lawyer should ensure the consequences under immigration laws.
